Broncos Face Salary Cap Challenge for Star

The Brisbane Broncos are on the brink of a significant decision regarding their salary cap, as rising star Gehamat Shibasaki has drawn considerable interest from rival clubs amid contract uncertainties.

Shibasaki's journey has been remarkable; he returned to the NRL through a train-and-trial opportunity last season and quickly became one of 2025's standout performers, going from a fringe player to an Origin and Kangaroos representative in under a year.

Despite this allure from other clubs, Shibasaki has expressed a clear desire to remain with the Broncos.

"Look, I really like the club, and I want to stay here," he shared with the Courier Mail.

"I am leaving it to my manager to sort out that stuff."

Reflecting on his previous situation, he added, "You take me back two years ago, I wasn't even playing NRL, I was just working, I had a job, so I am grateful to be here at the Broncos."

Shibasaki further remarked, "The reality is I'm happy here. They have done a lot for me, and (Michael Maguire) always says if I focus on the good habits and stay in the moment, then everything else will work itself out."

Nonetheless, retaining this burgeoning talent may prove challenging.

The Courier Mail reports that four NRL clubs are willing to offer Shibasaki far more than what the Broncos currently have on the table, with the possibility of him earning over $500,000 per year in the open market.
