The NRL's match review committee has determined that Brandon Smith will not face charges related to a cannonball-style tackle during the South Sydney's match against the Manly Sea Eagles on Friday night.
Referee Adam Gee penalised Smith and reported him for the tackle, which appeared to involve significant contact below the knee of a Manly player during the second half.
However, the tackle occurred while the player was in motion, making it debatable whether two other players were also engaged with the Manly ball runner during the incident.
Despite the concerning appearance of the tackle and the report filed, Smith has successfully avoided any penalties from the match review committee, allowing him to participate in South Sydney's upcoming match against the Brisbane Broncos as they seek to end a three-game losing streak.
Meanwhile, Manly hooker Jake Simpkin and Rabbitohs player Bronson Garlick have both received charges from the MRC stemming from the same game, though they will only incur fines.
Simpkin has been charged with a Grade 1 dangerous contact offense for a troublesome chicken wing tackle on Cameron Murray, which led to him being reported during the match.
If he pleads guilty early, he faces a fine of $1000; otherwise, the figure rises to $1500 if he opts to contest the charge unsuccessfully at the judiciary.
Garlick, who was not reported during the game, has received a Grade 1 careless high tackle charge for a first-half tackle on Lehi Hopoate.
Thanks to his three-year period without incident, Garlick's charge allows for a reduced fine of $750, or a risk of $1000 if he decides to go before the judiciary.
