The Brisbane Broncos are set to enhance their coaching structure in response to a disappointing NRL season. A significant outcome of their just-completed review is the recruitment of an additional assistant coach and the appointment of Matt Ballin to oversee the team's defensive strategy.
After securing a premiership in 2025, head coach Michael Maguire will remain in his role following a challenging 14th-place finish this season. The Broncos' defense was a primary concern, as they allowed 677 points-marking their worst performance since 2021.
Despite a previous wooden spoon season in 2020, where they conceded 31.2 points per game, this year's 28.2 average was deemed unsatisfactory. The departure of Ben Te'o as the defensive coach early in the season exacerbated these issues.
Ballin, a former Manly premiership-winning player and current assistant coach, is recognized for his defensive acumen and will now focus on strengthening the Broncos' defensive framework.
CEO Dave Donaghy communicated the review's conclusions to club members, emphasizing the commitment to supporting Maguire, noting, "We will invest further in the coaching and development resources." He confirmed that Trent Barrett will continue as the attack coach and highlighted the importance of Matt Ballin's new role.
The review revealed five priority areas for improvement, including restructuring football leadership, with Troy Thomson transitioning to executive general manager of football to align various programs more effectively.
Donaghy stated, "With expansion to 20 clubs and continued growing competition, we want to ensure the staff are equipped to take the fight up head on." Additionally, there will be a focus on reducing travel during pre-season preparations, aiming to optimize conditions for the players and staff.
Finally, the performance at Suncorp Stadium was highlighted as needing improvement, with a dismal record of 12 losses in 14 games. "An obvious area we need to improve," Donaghy acknowledged.
