Gehamat Shibasaki is set to join the Perth Bears, expressing his enthusiasm for representing the new team. The 28-year-old centre, previously with the Brisbane Broncos, has voiced his eagerness to don the Bears' colours.
Shibasaki experienced a career revival in 2025 after a challenging period. He played the entire season on a modest contract, which culminated in achieving Test international status, earning Queensland Maroons accolades, and securing a premiership ring.
His journey before this resurgence included stints at several clubs, including his NRL debut with the Broncos, as well as time with the Knights, Cowboys, and Rabbitohs. However, he struggled to find a permanent place in their line-ups.
After falling down the Broncos' pecking order in 2026, Shibasaki decided to pursue new opportunities. He expressed gratitude for the role coach Michael Maguire played in revitalizing his career.
"I appreciate the Broncos - they really re-lit my career," Shibasaki told the Courier Mail.
He praised Maguire for mentoring him to become a professional athlete and leader, noting, "I have really grown in that space and I appreciate them (the Broncos) so much for that."
Shibasaki's decision to join the Bears was influenced by coach Mal Meninga, who generated excitement about the new franchise. He acknowledged Meninga's efforts in fostering a positive culture for the team.
"I tried the new (Bears) kit on the other day and can't wait to play next year," he said regarding his future with Perth.
