In a significant move towards his NFL ambitions, Benjamin Te Kura recently showcased his skills with the San Francisco 49ers during their visit to Australia ahead of a match against the Los Angeles Rams.
Te Kura, a former Brisbane Broncos forward, made the strategic choice to pursue American football after being released from his NRL contract earlier this year.
The towering athlete, measuring over two meters, had been seen as a potential asset for the Broncos, particularly with player changes including Payne Haas's transfer to the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Following his departure, he trained with the 49ers, as well as the Seahawks and Bears, further solidifying his commitment to transition into the NFL.
Despite not securing a contract yet, reports suggest that his recent workouts have generated significant interest among talent scouts, eager to assess his potential.
Te Kura's short NRL career included five games, with his debut occurring in 2024. He initially received a six-week leave for training purposes before his official release.
Previously under contract with the Broncos until the end of 2027, he has now set his sights on becoming an offensive tackle in the NFL, inspired by the success of Australian player Jordan Mailata.
Reflecting on his journey, Te Kura stated, "I know I can make it, and making the decision to walk away from my Broncos contract should send the message that I am all in."
He added, "Every workout was different and I learned something from every one of them."
With ambitions to further develop his career, Te Kura is likely to benefit from the NFL's international pathways program.
