The New Zealand Warriors have unexpectedly allowed halfback Luke Metcalf to seek opportunities outside the club, signaling a possible transfer ahead.
Metcalf, an exceptional talent, is under contract until 2028 after signing with the Auckland-based team just prior to November 1 last year.
This decision was initially perceived as a brilliant move for the Warriors.
He stood out as the best halfback in the league during the first half of 2025, leading the Dally M Medal tally by a wide margin until an ACL injury prematurely ended his campaign.
The aftermath of the injury saw Metcalf miss the opening rounds of the 2026 season, while Tanah Boyd not only filled in for him but also emerged as one of the top players in the competition.
Boyd's impressive performance led to Metcalf being shifted to five-eighth upon his return, a position he previously held during his junior days at the Cronulla Sharks and initially with the Warriors when Shaun Johnson was still active.
Though the transition to halfback was a surprise, it proved to be a wise decision by coach Andrew Webster, showcasing Metcalf's talent.
However, Metcalf's stint at five-eighth was not fruitful, as the Warriors faced back-to-back losses before he sustained a thumb injury. He hasn't taken the field since then and was listed on the bench in their most recent match against the Eels without making an appearance.
According to News Corp, discussions between the Warriors and Metcalf have led to the club granting permission for him to explore the open market. A return to Australia is now a potential reality.
