Demetriou Advocates for PNG Stars in NRL

Jason Demetriou is engaging in a rare move within professional sports: he is actively advocating for his Papua New Guinea stars currently playing for the London Broncos to consider signing with the NRL's new 19th team, the PNG Chiefs.

As a former Rabbitoh and the current head coach of the London Broncos, Demetriou also holds the title of head coach for the PNG Kumuls. He is visibly enthusiastic about the prospect of seeing his PNG stars join the NRL team when it launches in 2028.

Demetriou intends to roll out the red carpet for PNG Chiefs' General Manager of Football, Michael Chammas, when he arrives in London in the upcoming weeks. He plans to introduce Chammas to two standout athletes who have dominated the RFL Championship recently.

This past Sunday, five-eighth Gairo Varo and fullback Morea Morea showcased their remarkable skills on the field.

With many of their PNG teammates out due to injuries, the duo rose to the occasion, taking on the challenge.

Varo scored four tries, while Morea completed a hat-trick, contributing to seven out of the total tries in a resounding 64-0 victory over the Midlands.

This match marked the Broncos' 11th consecutive win, further extending their unbeaten streak and setting a new club record.

Demetriou was overflowing with enthusiasm regarding Varo's performance.

"It's great to see Gairo getting his running game on - I thought that was probably the best he's played this year, which is exciting," he shared with NRL.com.
