In a devastating blow for Wakefield, their 24-year tenure in the Super League came to an end after Gareth O'Brien's dramatic golden point drop goal secured a 20-19 victory for Leigh.

Luke Gale's last-minute kick had given Wakefield a glimmer of hope, forcing the game into extra time.

However, missed opportunities from Gale and Max Jowitt cost Wakefield dearly.

On the other hand, O'Brien's heroics not only secured the win for Leigh but also ensured their place in the playoffs in their first season back in the top flight.

For Wakefield, it was a heart-wrenching finish, especially after a valiant fightback in the second half with two tries from Lee Kershaw.

Despite their efforts, Wakefield couldn't overcome their disastrous start to the season, losing 14 consecutive matches.

As a result, they now face the reality of life in the Championship next season.
