The NRL's leadership structure could soon change dramatically, with Peter V'landys poised to become its first executive chairman.
The Australian Rugby League Commission approved the proposal on Tuesday, according to CODE Sports, although clubs and state bodies must still provide further support.
V'landys is expected to announce his decision within days.
The role would merge his ARLC chairmanship with executive control of the NRL, placing him over both administration and daily operations.
He has led the commission since 2019 and became interim NRL chief executive after Andrew Abdo left earlier this year.
During that period, V'landys helped secure the game's record $5.3 billion broadcast agreement, confirmed the Perth Bears and advanced expansion plans involving a potential 20th team.
The appointment would likely end his 22-year tenure as Racing NSW chief executive. He has taken leave from that organisation while managing the NRL on an interim basis.
His priorities could include the proposed NRL investment in the English Super League and broader commercial and international growth.
Criticism has followed some administrative decisions, but rugby league is enjoying record revenue and expanding audiences.
Those conditions have strengthened the NRL's future and enabled ambitious plans, while V'landys now appears ready to accept the larger challenge.
