The 2030 Rugby League World Cup could use up to five venues across the United States and Pacific, including Hawaii and Utah.
News Corp reports the US has secured hosting rights, subject to final approval from participating nations and other key parties.
The International Rugby League said in July 2024 that Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Africa and the US had bid to host.
The previous plan for the US and Canada to host the 2025 tournament collapsed, as did France's backup offer, leading to a one-year postponement and a move to Australia.
The NRL and IRL reportedly want to build on international interest following the 2026 tournament's success and target areas with large Pasifika communities.
Samoa or Tonga could also stage matches, while Salt Lake City is known as a US rugby league stronghold.
New Zealand had support from fans and potential Pacific partners, but has never hosted a standalone World Cup after previously sharing hosting duties with Australia.
The IRL is also keen for several European nations to host the 2034 tournament, which could leave 2038 as the next edition held in an NRL-hosting location.
