Ponga's return lifts New Zealand hopes

Tonga's hopes of reaching a World Cup final ended for the third consecutive tournament, with New Zealand claiming a 34-10 semi-final victory.

"It's a disappointing way to finish, we've had an outstanding World Cup and we're happy with everything they've done," Tonga coach Kristian Woolf said.

"You can feel the disappointment in there and there's a bit of a missed opportunity with what the group's been able to do and how talented the group is."

The defeat may also close Jason Taumalolo's last opportunity to win a World Cup.

New Zealand's Kalyn Ponga returned from a broken arm after 23 days out, wearing a protective guard at Newcastle's McDonald Jones Stadium.

The fullback set up three of the Kiwis' six tries and made a crucial try-saving tackle as his side booked its first final in 13 years.

Captain James Fisher-Harris praised Ponga's defensive effort and leadership, calling him "a freak of a player".

Hooker Phoenix Crossland also returned from suspension. New Zealand will face Australia or Samoa in next Sunday's Brisbane final.
