Parramatta's 2027 tactical intrigue

Samoa's World Cup matches have offered Parramatta a glimpse of a possible 2027 combination involving Jarome Luai, Spencer Leniu and Junior Paulo.

Their contrasting styles could pose a tactical challenge, but against Tonga, with Eel Ronald Volkman at five-eighth, the trio showed they could play instinctively in a demanding contest.

Paulo's passing is an asset, particularly when he has room to operate in Parramatta's red-zone shifts.

That prospect sits amid concerns over the Eels' recruitment, pathways, coach Jason Ryles and incoming players Luai and Leniu.

The club has not been rebuilding; its front office has struggled to assemble a competitive roster since the 2022 Grand Final.

Several players had strong seasons before negotiating new contracts, then either left and struggled elsewhere or retired.

Dylan Brown, already on a deal above market value, received the game's richest offer to join Newcastle, whose roster included players on poor contracts negotiated by former recruitment boss Peter Parr.

Blaize Talagi departed after 2024 seeking a five-eighth role, with Penrith offering the chance to play alongside Nathan Cleary.

Parramatta then pursued Isaiah Iongi, who has extended his contract through the end of 2030.
