Jake Elliot's versatility could strengthen North Queensland's options at hooker as he begins a new chapter with the Cowboys.

The former Sydney Roosters utility has agreed to an early release and will join Todd Payten's Top 30 squad on a one-year deal.

Elliot was contracted to the Roosters through 2027 and is expected in Townsville for pre-season training in November.

He came close to his NRL debut this season, named on the extended bench for the Roosters' Round 27 match against South Sydney but ultimately not selected.

A key member of the club's NSW Cup side, Elliot will now seek first-grade opportunities in Cowboys colours.

He developed through the Roosters' junior system after coming through the Central Coast pathways, initially as a half before increasingly playing hooker.

Elliot represented NSW at five-eighth in the victorious 2024 Under-19s State of Origin team, partnering Mitchell Woods in the halves.

Jermaine McEwen, Cody Hopwood and Casey McLean have also emerged from that group and made their mark in the NRL this season.

North Queensland have Reed Mahoney as their starting hooker, with Soni Luke providing depth and contracted through 2027.
