Newcastle could pursue Melbourne captain Harry Grant as the Knights prepare for next season, when they are considered among the premiership contenders.
CODE Sports reported that Grant, previously believed to be contracted through 2028, has a clause allowing him to become a free agent if activated before November 1.
The hooker is expected to trigger it and test the market, where he is likely to attract strong interest alongside Latrell Mitchell, Nathan Cleary and Sam Walker.
Grant has not ruled out staying with Melbourne, but CODE Sports says he is open to joining Newcastle.
A move would reunite him with Queensland teammate Kalyn Ponga and create a potential spine featuring Fletcher Sharpe and Dylan Brown.
It could also allow Phoenix Crossland to shift to lock, a position he has been linked with.
Whether Newcastle can afford Grant remains uncertain.
The club has ten players off contract at the end of 2027, including Bradman Best and Jacob Saifiti, whose departures could create significant salary-cap room.
The Perth Bears have been ruled out as a possible destination.
