Toowoomba readies $450m NRL bid

Broncos appoint Ben Ikin as new head of football, per report

Peter V'landys visited a Toowoomba consortium seeking to bring the NRL's 20th team to the city after the PNG Chiefs.

Toowoomba is preparing a $450 million bid for entry in 2029. Central Queensland withdrew from a joint proposal with Darling Downs and South West Queensland in October, leaving Toowoomba to pursue its own bid.

Code Sports reports the consortium expects to apply formally to the Australian Rugby League Commission in December. V'landys is expected to choose the licence around late December, with the team to be confirmed by Christmas.

Several Queensland and New Zealand bids are expected to compete. Toowoomba would be the fifth Queensland bid; Ipswich Jets are considered contenders, and a Logan bid is expected.

"Certainly when we spoke to Peter on the weekend, he was very generous with his time and his information, and we thank Peter for that," Mark Mason, Toowoomba spokesman, told Code Sports.

Mason also said:

"We took Peter out and showed him some potential sites for future infrastructure.

"He didn't indicate a formal timeline (on naming the 20th team). It was effectively, 'Put your best foot forward when you're ready'."
