Kaeo Weekes delivered a spectacular try that may very well stand out as a contender for try-of-the-year, helping the Canberra Raiders secure a thrilling 36-34 victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Perth.
In the first half of the match at Optus Stadium on Saturday, the Raiders surged to a remarkable 24-4 lead, thanks in part to the impressive partnership between Simi Sasagi and Hudson Young.
However, South Sydney mounted a comeback, scoring three tries within a rapid nine-minute span, closing the gap to a mere two points with 23 minutes still to play.
The Raiders, who were on a four-match losing streak, appeared vulnerable, with their hopes for finals football beginning to dwindle.
That's when Weekes stepped up.
Starting from deep within their own territory, Weekes took the ball at his own try-line and initiated a run that fans will remember for ages.
He evaded two tacklers within just ten meters of his own goal, shrugged off another defender shortly after, and deftly faked out an opponent with a dummy.
Though still 70 meters from the try-line, he found an opening and sprinted past two pursuers to score a remarkable solo try.
Yet, the drama was not over just yet.
