St George Illawarra's rebuild faces key gaps

St George Illawarra Dragons 2023 NRLW draw snapshot

St George Illawarra's 2027 squad projection leaves three starting backline spots vacant, highlighting the need for centres and wingers.

The 2026 campaign unravelled after multiple early losses, and Shane Flanagan was dismissed.

A young side improved under Dean Young, while emerging players and several arrivals offer hope of a turnaround in 2027.

The projected side has Scott Drinkwater and Phillip Sami in the back three, with Kodi Nikorima and Luke Metcalf in the halves.

Keaon Koloamatangi and the Couchman brothers feature in a youthful pack.

The salary cap should have room as Clint Gutherson, Valentine Holmes and others are set to leave.

More departures could follow after 2027. The Dragons also need a reserve hooker because Connor Watson's stay at the club is only a gap year in 2027.

With young forwards in abundance, outside backs remain the priority for a club seeking to challenge near the top in coming years.
