Slater's Surprises: Coaching Carousel Spins for 2026

Billy Slater reveals second State of Origin winner unlikely to return for Queensland in 2026

Billy Slater, Queensland's State of Origin coach, acknowledges the likelihood of a revamped coaching team for the 2026 series, particularly due to potential changes in assistant coaching roles.

It is expected that Josh Hannay, currently a strong candidate for an NRL head coaching position, will not return as Slater's assistant.

Slater expressed, "I would be surprised if Hannay was not in charge of an NRL club in 2026," reflecting on the uncertainty surrounding current coaches.

Veteran prop Josh Papalii played his 24th and final Origin game, coming out of retirement to contribute to Queensland's series-deciding Game 3 victory.

This shift underscores the anticipated changes in the squad for next year.

Reports indicate that Hannay, linked to a coaching role at the Titans, is emerging as a frontrunner to replace veteran coach Des Hasler, who is under pressure after the Titans' recent struggles.

Hasler has a contract clause that could permit his dismissal now that the team is mathematically out of finals contention.

Additionally, other NRL teams may also seek new coaches as the season wraps up.

Newcastle is reportedly set to part ways with Adam O'Brien following a disappointing campaign, while Todd Payten's position at the Cowboys is in jeopardy, given the team's recent poor performance, dropping them to 12th on the ladder.

Payten led North Queensland to the second week of the 2024 finals but has struggled with consistency since taking over.

Hannay, who has experience as both a player and an assistant coach, currently works under Craig Fitzgibbon at Cronulla and previously assisted at the Cowboys.

His background and popularity among fans make him a compelling candidate if North Queensland opts to change leadership.
