Warriors star Shaun Johnson has made the decision to withdraw himself from the New Zealand squad for the upcoming Pacific Championships.

Despite this, Johnson remains confident that the Kiwis will still field a formidable team without his presence.

Johnson, who narrowly missed out on the NRL Dally M Medal to Knights fullback Kalyn Ponga, was recognized for his outstanding performance as a halfback by receiving the halfback of the year award.

It was anticipated that this accolade would lead to a revival of his international career in the series against Samoa and Australia.

However, the 2014 Golden Boot winner admitted that he contemplated retiring from the sport at the conclusion of last season.

Fortunately, Johnson's mindset has drastically changed and he now eagerly looks forward to the year 2024.

Although he has opted out of the squad for now, Johnson has not completely shut the door on representing the Kiwis in the future.
