Run Nation's Return Faces Legal Hurdle

Run It Straight

Organisers have scheduled Run Nation Championship for November 28 at Sydney's Royal Randwick Racecourse, after the NSW Supreme Court halted its September edition.

Justice Andrew Coleman ruled it a combat sport under state law, rejecting organisers' claim that it did not require Combat Sports Authority regulation.

"The wording in the code describing the contact as a 'tackle' cannot alter the fact RNC (Run Nation Championship) is a collision sport," Justice Coleman said.

A legal return requires a permit and compliance with combat-sport event rules.

A NSW parliamentary committee is due to examine how emerging combat sports should be regulated.

The Combat Sports Authority told the committee that bare-knuckle boxing, power slap and collision contests need safeguards.

Ryan Satterthwaite, a 19-year-old from New Zealand, died in 2019 after sustaining a serious head injury during an impromptu run-it-straight game with friends.

Run Nation chief executive Tremaine Fernandez said, "RNC is here to stay and ... we're excited to work with the Combat Sports Authority and the opportunities that may bring," Mr Fernandez said.
