Brisbane's bid to host the 2027 NRL Grand Final faces a major obstacle from Rugby World Cup scheduling.
Suncorp Stadium has 10 World Cup matches, including fixtures on October 2 and 4, while the NRL decider is pencilled in for Sunday, October 3.
Venue contracts often require field-exclusion periods for turf work, making it highly unlikely the Grand Final could fit between those matches.
Sydney is poised to retain the event, although the NRL has not secured a venue for next year.
The city's previous hosting agreement expired after the Sydney Roosters defeated the Newcastle Knights.
NRL executive chairman Peter V'landys favours selling the rights annually rather than signing a long-term deal.
"We're not looking at (long-term deals) at this stage because it's such a valuable product to sell it yearly," V'landys said.
He said expansion to 20 teams could bring two conferences, with their winners meeting in a Super Bowl-style final.
Brisbane last hosted the Grand Final in 2021, when COVID restrictions prevented Sydney from staging it.
