'Sticking to the roots': James Graham, Braith Anasta dismiss calls to ban the kick-off

Rugby League legend James Graham has stepped into the ring as controversy swirls around the potential axing of the kick-off in the NRL.

Former NRL stalwart and England international James Graham has come out swinging against the idea of banning the kick-off, following heated discussions sparked by Moses Suli's recent injury in the opening moments of a match.

During the Anzac Day showdown between St George Illawarra and Sydney Roosters, Suli collided with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves in a brutal opening tackle, leading both coaches to acknowledge the need for better player protection during kick-off moments.

Graham, a vocal advocate for concussion awareness, revealed he endured over 100 head injuries throughout his career.

Despite this, he vehemently argued on Monday night's NRL 360 that eliminating the kick-off would be a step too far.

"If you want a completely safe game, you're in the wrong arena," Graham declared passionately.

"You're watching the wrong contest.

The essence of the game cannot solely be viewed through the lens of safety."

In a nod to the traditional rugged nature of Rugby League, Graham and his fellow former player Braith Anasta are standing their ground, refusing to let go of a fundamental aspect of the sport.
