The NRL is exploring the possibility of a groundbreaking opening round for the 2027 season, which may feature matches played across five nations on three continents.
During the off-season, reports from The Sydney Morning Herald indicate that the NRL is contemplating a 'Global Round' aimed at furthering the game's international presence.
This ambitious concept is reportedly championed by NRL Chairman Peter V'landys and is set to include venues in Asia, Europe, and North America.
Potential cities for the matches include Dubai, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, London, Miami, and the South of France.
Although this idea has not yet been confirmed by either V'landys or NRL CEO Andrew Abdo, it could serve as leverage in future broadcasting negotiations.
If deemed successful, the event could be established as an annual tradition, similar to the existing five-year agreement that allows the NRL to kick off Round 1 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, USA.
