New Zealand face Ponga-Kini dilemma

Reece Walsh and Kalyn Ponga

Phoenix Crossland is available for Saturday's semi-final against Tonga after a four-match ban for the hip-drop tackle that seriously injured Nathan Cleary in the NRL preliminary final.

His return offers another No. 9 option: Te Maire Martin covered for Jahrome Hughes last week after being named utility behind hooker Jeremy Marshall-King.

Kalyn Ponga returned to training after surgery on the arm he broke in the tournament opener against Australia, where he scored two tries, including one with the broken arm.

Keano Kini has impressed at fullback in Ponga's absence. Dagg asked, "So, after watching that performance, what do you do? If Kalyn Ponga is available, does he come straight back in?"

Ackerman would start Ponga at fullback if fit, move Kini to the bench and use Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad on the wing.

Winger Ronaldo Mulitalo will miss the match after a one-game suspension for a high shot on Fijian winger Ronald Philitoga last Saturday.

Ackerman cautioned that Ponga might not be fit for the semi-final and could remain in doubt for the final.
