South Sydney's coach Wayne Bennett has provided a strong hint that Latrell Mitchell may finally make his comeback from injury in round 26.
The star centre has been sidelined since the Magic Round in May due to nerve damage stemming from back and calf injuries.
On Monday, Mitchell participated in training and was included in Souths' extended squad for the match against the Warriors on Saturday, although he was ultimately held back.
The Rabbitohs have been unable to offer a definitive timeline regarding Mitchell's recovery, which has involved consultations with a neurologist.
However, Bennett now expresses optimism that Mitchell will make his anticipated return against Gold Coast next week, stating, "I'm confident."
He noted, "There was a chance (for this week). He trained pretty well but just probably needs another week. We took a cautious approach and we'll give him another week."
Initially, it appeared Mitchell might miss the rest of the season, but his return could provide a vital boost for the seventh-placed Souths as they head toward the finals.
Before injuring his back in round nine against Newcastle, Mitchell was in outstanding form.
Bennett refrained from commenting on the impact of Mitchell's return for a Souths team eager to secure their first finals appearance since 2022.
"Why don't you ask me that next week? That'd be good," he replied.
A win against the third-placed Warriors this week would significantly improve the Rabbitohs' chances of making the finals, with an additional victory ensuring their spot.
If Souths triumph over the Warriors and St George Illawarra defeats Canterbury later, the Rabbitohs will also secure a finals berth.
Bennett is seeking a disciplined performance against the soaring Warriors, who aim for their first premiership in 2026.
"the key is to minimise the errors. We did that really well last week," Bennett remarked.
He added that their success depends on completing sets and avoiding turnovers in vulnerable areas.
Campbell Graham missed Friday's captain's run due to a calf injury, but he is expected to play on Souths' right wing as planned.
