The Blues halves combo is shaping up with Mitchell Moses and Jarome Luai receiving a massive hint ahead of Origin selection, leaving New South Wales fans split down the middle like a contentious referee call.

Assistant coach Bryce Cartwright dropped a hint that Moses could be wearing the coveted halfback jersey, with Luai at five-eighth, in a bold move for the Origin team.

Moses has been out of action since round three after copping a foot injury, but he's now back on the field and eyeing that No.7 spot.

With Nathan Cleary sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Moses has a chance to step up and show his worth under the watchful eye of coach Michael Maguire.

While some are touting Matt Burton as a potential five-eighth, Cartwright hinted that the battle for the halves positions is likely between Nicho Hynes, Luai, and Moses.

"It looks that way," Cartwright said on SEN Radio, hinting at Moses' return and previous performance in the Blues jersey.

Despite doubts about Moses' readiness to return, the Blues camp seems to be leaning towards him retaining his spot in the crucial playmaking role.

As the selection race heats up like a high-stakes game, Moses and Luai have a golden opportunity to prove themselves and earn their place in the NSW squad to take on the Maroons in the upcoming State of Origin clash.
