Matildas' Fowler withdraws, returns to Australia

Mary Fowler and Nathan Cleary.

Nathan Cleary underwent two operations last week to repair a broken left leg and a stress fracture in his right foot.

On Tuesday night, Penrith reporter Nathan Taylor said Mary Fowler was back in Australia with Cleary. Taylor, of The Western Weekender, posted from the Panthers' presentation night: "Confirmed. Mary Fowler back in Australia, at home with her injured partner Nathan Cleary."

Earlier that day, the Matildas announced Fowler had withdrawn from friendlies against Germany and Haiti on October 10 and 14.

The team gave no further explanation, saying Fowler had stepped away due to "personal circumstances". It added: "The decision was made following discussions between Fowler, Manchester City and Matildas staff."

Teammate Hayley Raso said she did not know why Fowler was absent. "I haven't spoken to Mary. I only just found out the news myself," Raso said.

Raso called Fowler valuable and said the team was sad she would miss camp, while welcoming Leah Davidson and hoping to see Fowler back.

The 23-year-old also withdrew from Matildas matches against Brazil and Chinese Taipei in November 2024 to recharge physically and mentally. She said then: "Playing for the national team is something that I never take for granted."
