Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has responded to reports linking superstar prop Payne Haas with a big-money switch to Sydney NRL team Manly Sea Eagles.
Manly CEO Tony Mestrov expressed interest in Haas, stating that they are looking for an elite middle forward like him for the 2027 season when they will have salary cap space available.
This has raised concerns for the Broncos, as Haas is a key player and the second-highest paid forward in the NRL.
The club is already facing challenges with their salary cap, as "two-thirds" of their NRL roster will become free agents in the next two seasons.
This has led to speculation that players like Selwyn Cobbo may be forced out if they want to retain Haas.
Maguire acknowledged the situation, stating, "We're aware of the interest in Payne and we want to keep hold of him.
We'll do whatever it takes to secure his future with the Broncos." However, the financial constraints and competition from other clubs could make it difficult for Brisbane to keep Haas.
The uncertainty has also affected negotiations with players like Cobbo, who may have to consider a pay cut to stay with the Broncos.
The club is determined to retain their key players, including Haas and Cobbo, but the challenges with the salary cap could force them to make tough decisions in the upcoming seasons.
