Latrell Mitchell, a prominent player for South Sydney, faced significant challenges this season due to a serious back injury. A bulging disc kept him on the sidelines for 15 weeks, limiting him to just nine appearances. His absence raised concerns about his return to the game this year.
Fortunately, Mitchell returned in time for the Rabbitohs' final two regular-season matches, where they secured convincing victories over Gold Coast and Sydney Roosters. With Mitchell and key teammate David Fifita, who had struggled with a hamstring injury, now at full strength, South Sydney is prepared for their elimination final against Newcastle on Friday at Allianz Stadium.
Reflecting on his injury, Mitchell admitted, "I didn't know if I was going to play again this year." He attributed his recovery to persistence and seeking multiple medical opinions during a particularly painful period. "At halftime in the Knights (round-nine) game it was burning me … you wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy."
In his first two matches back, Mitchell quickly made his mark, contributing a try, two try assists, along with six tackle busts and two line breaks. He did, however, receive criticism for a tackle on rookie halfback Toby Rodwell, prompting a response from former teammates.
Mitchell remained focused on his goals. "I'm keen. It's special and (coach) Wayne (Bennett) is a special man," he stated. As he prepares for the finals, he emphasizes the importance of both his experience and contribution to the team. "I love finals footy; I love big games," he affirmed, signaling his readiness to help South Sydney succeed.
