Coby Black's impressive debut for the Canberra Raiders has sparked discussions about his decision to leave the Brisbane Broncos, with many now viewing the move as a pivotal moment in his career.
In a standout performance on Saturday, Black scored 26 points in a 50-30 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys, setting a record for the highest points by a debutant in the history of professional rugby league in Australia.
Kevin Walters, the former Broncos coach, praised Black's first-grade debut, stating, "I've never seen a better debut." He emphasized that moving away from the pressures of Brisbane allowed Black to flourish.
Walters noted the intense scrutiny of the No.7 jersey at Brisbane, traditionally worn by club legend Allan Langer. This weight of expectation has led several young halfbacks to struggle or leave the team.
Reflecting on Black's departure, Walters remarked, "With the current situation at the Broncos he's better out of there... Because around the Brisbane No.7 there are always comparisons to 'Alfie'." He acknowledged the pressure that comes with the position.
