As the NRL finals approach, Latrell Mitchell is relishing his return to the field after a lengthy injury absence. He has recently addressed the media, expressing excitement and relief ahead of the elimination final against the Newcastle Knights.
Mitchell, having missed twelve matches earlier in the season, reflected on the challenges he faced during his recovery. "You always want to be there for your mates, I just wanted to come back and add a bit of value," he stated. At one point, he was uncertain if he would play again this year, making his comeback all the more gratifying.
His injury stemmed from a bulging disc in his back, which he confirmed had been a long-standing issue. "At halftime in the Newcastle Knights game (Round 9) it was just burning me," Mitchell shared. Although he returned in Round 11, he did not play again until Round 25.
Since his comeback, he's focused on enjoying the game rather than trying to impress. Mitchell noted, "Wayne told me he doesn't need me to do anything special, just let the special things come." One such moment was a notable tackle against Roosters half Toby Rodwell, which raised eyebrows among Roosters players. "I do wish him (Rodwell) the best, it was just a welcome to first grade thing," Mitchell joked.
Preparing for the crucial match against Newcastle, he remains optimistic despite the setbacks he has faced. "Adversity is always going to be there and challenges will always be faced... they're lessons, not losses," he remarked, emphasizing his love for the team and the joy of playing football.
South Sydney will host the Newcastle Knights at Allianz Stadium in the first week of the NRL finals, with kickoff scheduled for 7:50 PM.
