Slade Griffin will join Stacey Jones as a Kiwis assistant coach for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, giving him another way to serve New Zealand.
Griffin played one Test for the Kiwis in 2018 before an injury the following week led to his immediate medical retirement.
After an operation, he said he was devastated to watch the team play later that year, but still hoped to wear the black-and-white jersey again.
He described coaching as a second chance to contribute.
"Got the opportunity of second life of coaching, so yeah I'm just here as a support person."
"I'm really excited to just help the boys where I can."
Griffin said his New Zealand background gave him an understanding of what representing the country means to the players and the public.
"I think just coming from New Zealand, you know what it means to the country, the people, and to the boys that get to play."
