New Zealand will begin its Rugby League World Cup campaign against Australia on Thursday, October 15, at Allianz Stadium.

Coach Stacey Jones has selected Kalyn Ponga and Dane Gagai to debut for the Kiwis, alongside fellow newcomers Jacob Laban and Tanner Stowers-Smith.

Ponga, who previously represented Queensland, had never played Test football and was granted his wish to join New Zealand earlier this year.

Born in Australia, he spent five years in Palmerston North after his Maori parents moved there when he was eight.

Ponga said his decision reflected a desire to understand his culture: "It's special and I am still learning ... still on a journey."

Gagai has played 23 times for Queensland and seven times for Australia, including the 2017 World Cup final victory.

The International Rugby League Board approved his switch last week, citing his heritage and the fact he had not played for Australia since 2018.

The squad's forwards include captain James Fisher-Harris, Naufahu Whyte, Moses Leota and Xavier Willison.

Jones said the team had built towards the tournament over several years, with last year's Pacific Championships victory an important step.

He said the squad combined experienced players with new talent.
