Mitch Kenny, the hooker for the Penrith Panthers, has reached an agreement to stay with the club until 2031, ensuring the retention of local junior talent.
Kenny plays a vital role in the Panthers' success, and with several key players set to become free agents after the 2027 season, it was essential for the club to keep him on board.
The four-year extension, reported by NewsCorp, represents a significant move toward maintaining the team's stellar lineup for 2028.
Several notable players, including Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, and Brian To'o, are allowed to negotiate with other teams starting November 1, alongside others like Blaize Talagi and Liam Martin.
Moses Leota, a New Zealand forward, is also free to engage with rival clubs but has yet to secure an agreement with either the Panthers or another team.
Plans are reportedly in motion to initiate discussions regarding extensions for Yeo, Cleary, and Martin in the weeks ahead to preserve the core of their championship-winning squad.
Shane Elford, head of football at Penrith, emphasized to NewsCorp the importance of retaining Kenny as a top priority.
"We value him highly at the club," Elford stated to the outlet.
"Everyone sees the players he is, but he is also great for the culture. He is like the third captain."
