Kangaroos call up Smith after Collins injury

Isaah Yeo has postponed surgery to captain Australia at the Rugby League World Cup, with Latrell Mitchell and Tom Trbojevic also named in Kevin Walters' 23-man squad.

Walters must replace Roosters forward Lindsay Collins, who was ruled out on Tuesday with a foot injury he carried through the finals.

The 30-year-old had played 17 Tests and won his first NRL premiership on Sunday night. Panthers forward Lindsay Smith, who has two Tests for Australia, has been called in instead.

Smith was also part of Australia's wider squad for last year's Ashes tour of England.

NSW State of Origin forward Mitch Barnett remains omitted. The Warriors were miffed by his exclusion and published an article about it on their website.

Walters selected Cowboys forward Reuben Cotter despite what the article described as a couple of down years. Dolphins supporters were also unhappy that Max Plath missed selection after making his Origin debut this year.

"That's the beauty of the Australian team is we have got some great options, and there's no right or wrong with who we select," Walters said on Monday. "It's a matter of sitting down with the leaders, as well as myself and making sure we get the right people to play in the right positions.

"We took four away last year. I feel like they're really important and key positions so we want to pick the best players in those positions to play for Australia to cover everything."

Roosters captain James Tedesco is likely to take the fullback role from Reece Walsh, who wore the jumper last year.

England, Tonga and Samoa announced their squads on Tuesday. England selected 10 NRL players: Victor Radley, Hugo Savala, Dominic Young, Morgan Knowles, Herbie Farnworth, Ben Talty, Max King, Morgan Smithies, Kai Pearce-Paul and AJ Brimson.
