South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston has expressed enthusiasm for a potential move to Papua New Guinea, aiming to be a part of the PNG Chiefs during their first season in 2028.
Recently, Johnston made headlines by becoming the all-time NRL try-scorer, breaking Ken Irvine's longstanding record of 212 tries.
Given his PNG heritage and experience with 12 Test matches for the Kumuls, Johnston stands out as a prime candidate for Michael Chammas, the Chiefs' head of football, to lead the new franchise in their debut.
In his new role, Johnston could be positioned as a winger or at fullback, with captaincy a possibility as he transitions from his celebrated NRL career to this new chapter in Melanesia.
After his milestone game on Friday, he made a guest appearance on Nine's '100% Footy,' where he was questioned about his potential move in 2028.
"There you go, put me on the spot," Johnston chuckled in response.
"I'm signed for this year and next year at Souths, and after that, if I've still got some miles to go in the legs, I'll definitely be talking to the Chiefs."
"It would be pretty cool to be one of the first signed for a Papua New Guinean team."
"They absolutely love footy over there, and I've got a good relationship with the fans and the prime minister over there. I think that's something I'd look forward to."
