Is the NRL in America just a rat's fable?

The MSG Sphere illuminates the Las Vegas skyline to celebrate American Independence Day in 2023

As an Australian living in the US, I can confidently say that Americans don't care about the NRL.

I don't mean to be a Negative Nigel, but let's face it, the Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs, Roosters, and Broncos coming to Las Vegas for the season-opening double-header won't make a ripple in the sports scene here.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo may see the US as the holy grail of sports markets, but the reality is that most locals are completely oblivious to the NRL's existence.

Maybe if the NRL is just looking to cash in on sports betting, then Vegas is the perfect place for these openers.

But if they expect Americans to embrace the game and become die-hard fans, they'll be sorely disappointed.

It's been hyped up that the games will be aired during US "prime time" on Fox Sports 1, thanks to Rupert Murdoch.

But let's be honest, Saturday night is far from prime time here, and TV ratings at that time are usually abysmal.
