'the players continue to inspire': Indigenous stars pave way for next generation

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has emphasized his commitment to honoring the legacy of Indigenous players while also fostering the development of future First Nations talent ahead of the upcoming Indigenous Round.

This annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture has expanded in 2025 to include both NRL and NRLW competitions, now celebrated over two rounds.

Tuesday's official launch featured a mix of past, present, and emerging players, including Cliff Lyons, Josh Addo-Carr, Olivia Kernick, and junior representatives from the Redfern All Blacks, showcasing three generations of talent.

As Indigenous stars take the spotlight over the next couple of weeks, the round also serves to highlight the ongoing efforts the NRL is making in the First Nations community throughout the year.

The NRL has made history as the first sporting organization to unveil a second Elevate Reconciliation Action Plan and actively conducts various initiatives aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

The School to Work program, launched in 2012, has successfully assisted thousands of Indigenous individuals in navigating their educational journeys, and Abdo takes pride in the program's achievements.
