St George Illawarra Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has dismissed rumors linking the club to off-contract backs Jake Averillo and Murray Taulagi, stating that these claims are more a product of media speculation than any actual discussions within the organization.
With both Averillo and Taulagi eligible to negotiate with other clubs before the 2027 season, there has been chatter about them as potential targets as the Dragons undergo a roster overhaul under Flanagan's guidance.
However, during an appearance on The Saints Podcast, Flanagan made it clear that the club has not engaged in any talks regarding either player. "That's just media speculation. We haven't had any communication with them," Flanagan said.
His remarks come at a time when the Red V is actively reshaping its squad, having successfully brought in four new players for the upcoming season: Daniel Atkinson, David Fale, Josh Kerr, and Setu Tu, as part of their ongoing rebuilding efforts.
Despite both Averillo and Taulagi being appealing options in the current market, Flanagan's firm stance indicates that the Dragons are confident in their current direction and are not in pursuit of additional backline help at this moment.
St George Illawarra is concentrating on internal development and strategic recruitment, aiming to reposition themselves as a long-term premiership contender with Flanagan at the helm.
