The St George Illawarra Dragons have taken steps to secure their future with Dean Young's new contract, which includes a protective option for an additional year.
Since the departure of Shane Flanagan early in the season, Young has served as the interim coach of the Red V. Although the team's position on the ladder does not reflect it, there are indications of progress within the squad under the guidance of the former premiership-winning player.
The Dragons have approached the coaching signing process with a sense of patience, as significant recruitment for 2027 has already been completed, securing players like Scott Drinkwater, Luke Metcalf, Keaon Koloamatangi, Phillip Sami, and Connor Watson.
Interestingly, the Red V management opted to offer Young only a two-year contract, a decision that may have raised some eyebrows.
In rugby league discussions, it's commonly accepted that coaches should not be evaluated until they have completed three years in their role. However, with positive recruitment outcomes and Young having ample time this season to implement his strategies, the Dragons believed that two years was a sufficient timeframe to begin their commitment.
According to News Corp, if Young's tenure proves successful, the club has the option to extend his contract through to the end of 2029.
It appears that this option is not contingent upon performance; rather, it is a club decision on whether to activate it.
However, should Young lead the Dragons-currently in a rebuilding phase-to the finals next season, it is widely anticipated that the option will be exercised and an extension is likely.
