Dolphins Overcome Slow Start, Eye Finals with Recent Victory

NRL

The Dolphins have solidified their hold on a top-four NRL position after rallying from a slow start to defeat Parramatta 34-16 in Brisbane.

The Redcliffe team fell behind 10-0 within the first 19 minutes, but they responded with five consecutive tries in front of 24,728 fans, claiming their eighth consecutive victory at Suncorp Stadium on Friday.

This win brings Kristian Woolf's squad to 36 points, tying them with the third-placed Warriors, who play Saturday, with only two rounds remaining before their first finals appearance.

Having a two-win cushion over Cronulla and Newcastle (both at 32 points) - who are yet to take the field this round - the Dolphins can secure a top-four position with a victory against the Sydney Roosters next Saturday.

"That was a tough game for us ... you're expected to win, a big game next week against the Roosters, so it's hard not to look ahead a little bit at times," Woolf stated.

"There's a bit to learn for us. We need to be better next week, better in finals, but we got a win and there's plenty of good things to take away. Sitting in the top four, it's all in the hands and we'd love to play as many finals as we can here."

Herbie Farnworth scored twice, while halves Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa paired effectively, and Selwyn Cobbo demonstrated strength out of defense, with Max Plath shining in another impactful bench appearance.

Despite having led for just five of their matches this season, the Dolphins had to respond to a fast start by the Eels, as Ronald Volkman scored from dummy half.

The visitors took a 10-0 lead, aided by a series of high tackles from Dolphins center Jack Bostock, after Will Penisini offloaded to Brian Kelly in a tough situation.

Nevertheless, the Dolphins' comeback seemed certain when Katoa skillfully balanced his kicking and running game, scoring from a scrum as Farnworth exploited a gap.

A set restart opened another opportunity, leading to a Nikorima assist for Cobbo's try.

The scoring spree continued with Jamayne Isaako, after a lengthy review, grounding a try following a Bostock set-up.

Cobbo nearly scored again just before halftime, but a volleyed pass was ruled forward.

Instead, Isaako struck again, stepping inside to finish another strong play from his teammates, extending the lead to 22-10 early in the second half.

Kelma Tuilagi finally broke the Dolphins' scoring streak by claiming a loose ball in-goal after Nikorima's failed attempt to secure it.

Farnworth, however, capped off the match for the Dolphins, sprinting 85 meters to secure his second try after collecting a loose pass.

Bostock and Thomas Flegler were placed on report, with Flegler cited for a hip-drop tackle late in the game.

Eels coach Jason Ryles fiercely contested the decision to award Isaako's try but acknowledged his young team's learning experience.

"Fight and effort only gets you so far and we hung in for a long period," he said.

"They're a well put together, physical, mature footy team and we've got a heap of kids out there at the moment learning their trade."
