Cliff Lyons, the legendary Manly player, has shown his support for Latrell Mitchell and other players who face constant abuse on social media.

Lyons, who was invited by the NRL to present the Clive Churchill Medal at the grand final, expressed his delight at accepting the invitation.

He was replacing Peter Sterling, who was unavailable for the event.

Lyons, who received the Clive Churchill Medal himself in 1987, reminisced about the thrill of winning the award and expressed his excitement about being a part of the grand final day.

The former Sea Eagles five-eighth also empathized with Mitchell, who had recently faced scathing criticism from Rod Churchill.

While Churchill's attack on Mitchell was covered in the mainstream media, Lyons acknowledged that the social media backlash would have been intense if it had existed during his playing days.

Lyons expressed his relief that he didn't have to deal with keyboard warriors during his career.
