Cherry-Evans rules out Sydney Roosters return

The Roosters have withdrawn their multi-million-dollar offer to keep Sam Walker beyond 2027, a decision Daly Cherry-Evans says he respects.

Cherry-Evans said coach Trent Robinson and chairman Nick Politis had not contacted him about the situation.

Bound for the English Super League, the 37-year-old ruled out another season as a Roosters player, although he would not call it a promise.

"No, it's all done. It's all done," Cherry-Evans said on Thursday.

"Look, I'm so proud of my time at the Roosters, but you won't be seeing me back there as a player."

He is content to end his 16-season NRL career with a second premiership, having won his first with Manly in 2011.

Having once walked away from a lucrative 10-year Gold Coast deal to stay at Manly, Cherry-Evans said he did not find Walker's situation sad.

"I really admire the way that the Roosters have stood their ground on what they believe to be right for the club," he said.

He said Walker was making the best choice for himself, his family and his future, and that neither side had done anything wrong.

The pair spoke this week while Walker was at World Cup camp with the Kangaroos in Townsville; Cherry-Evans said his friend was positive and supported by family and friends.

He backed Walker to have a long NRL career, while noting that players rarely stay with one club throughout their careers.

If the Roosters release Walker from the final year of his contract, he will become a free agent on Sunday; Toby Rodwell is seen as a likely No.7 replacement.

Cherry-Evans praised Rodwell's future prospects, then added: "But I'm not playing hypotheticals with you."
