Daly Cherry-Evans has assured fans that he won't overstay his welcome at the Sydney Roosters, stating he is prepared to step aside if he feels he's hindering the development of younger halfbacks.
As the team prepares for Thursday's intense matchup against his former club Manly, Cherry-Evans has indicated he won't make any final decisions about his future for several months.
The 37-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Roosters following the last season, but rumors suggest there may be an option for him to extend his stay into 2027.
The topic of Cherry-Evans' future sparked considerable discussion last year, with Tuesday marking a year since he announced that 2025 would be his final season with the Sea Eagles.
When questioned about when he plans to make a decision regarding 2027, Cherry-Evans hinted that the club's direction could influence his choice.
"As long as the club's not in a position where they're holding any young kids back, that would be my priority right now in my career," Cherry-Evans said.
"If the Roosters didn't have space for me next year because of the potential of someone else, that is completely OK. But I'm a player that will continue to back myself to play at a higher level."
"I'm really OK with either thing happening, but honestly, I'm not going to know right now. I'm probably not going to know in a couple of months' time."
Should he choose to retire, Cherry-Evans plans to adopt a similar strategy as last year, keeping his future intentions under wraps until the season concludes.
