Selwyn Cobbo's future with the Brisbane Broncos is in jeopardy as the club undertakes a $3.5 million retention strategy by extending the contracts of key players.

Currently earning approximately $650,000 this season, Cobbo's position is threatened due to a salary cap crunch, and the Broncos have not yet offered him a new deal, focusing instead on other players.

Recent reports indicate that the Broncos have finalized extensions for captain Adam Reynolds, center Kotoni Staggs, and young hooker Blake Mozer, further complicating Cobbo's prospects.

Reynolds reportedly declined a lucrative two-year, $1.5 million offer from the Wests Tigers, choosing to remain in Brisbane with his family instead.

Reynolds stated, "There were quite a number of clubs that showed interest in 'Reyno'.

...

I have no doubt he can play for another 12 months."

Moreover, Staggs has secured a three-year extension worth about $800,000 per season, a significant move for the Broncos as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Sharks.

Staggs, who won the Allan Langer Award as the club's best back last season, has also been elevated to Brisbane's leadership group for 2025.

With the retention of these players, Cobbo may need to consider a steep pay cut to secure his place in the team.

The situation leaves his future at the club uncertain, as the Broncos prioritize big-name players in their strategy to build a competitive squad.
