Australia's World Cup surprises: Mitchell, Trbojevic

Australia confirm 23-man Rugby League World Cup squad

Australia named its 23-player squad for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, with Isaah Yeo appointed captain despite a ruptured pectoral muscle.

Latrell Mitchell and Tom Trbojevic were surprise selections; Reece Walsh is expected to be fit after injury kept him out late in the regular season.

The squad includes Bradman Best, Jack Bostock, Blayke Brailey, Patrick Carrigan, Lindsay Collins, Reuben Cotter, Tom Dearden, Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, David Fifita, Harry Grant, Keaon Koloamatangi and Liam Martin.

Also selected are Latrell Mitchell, Mitchell Moses, Cameron Munster, Cameron Murray, Jacob Preston, Kotoni Staggs, James Tedesco, Tom Trbojevic, Sam Walker, Reece Walsh and Isaah Yeo.

Yeo said surgery for his injury could affect the start of next year, but he would play only if he could contribute.

"There is no higher honour in the game than playing for your country, and I'm fortunate enough to captain it," Yeo said.

"I only put my hand up for selection if I felt I could add to the team."

Selwyn Cobbo was a notable omission. Ethan Strange, Hamish Stewart and leading try-scorer Thomas Jenkins were named as shadow players.
