'What in the world is happening?': Latrell Mitchell debacle highlights the NRL's bewildering unpredictability

NRL fans and pundits are up in arms after yet another perplexing series of events that have shone a light on the game's frustrating lack of consistency.

According to reports from news.com.au, South Sydney Rabbitohs have delivered a crushing blow to the Parramatta Eels in the same week they bid farewell to coach Brad Arthur, breaking a six-game losing streak with a resounding 42-26 victory on Saturday night.

However, the much-needed second win of the season for the bottom-dwelling Rabbitohs was overshadowed by controversial circumstances following yet another incident involving a hip drop.

After racing to a commanding 22-0 lead, the Eels managed to claw their way back with two quick tries in the 30th and 32nd minutes of the match.

But it was the 38th-minute moment that led to Latrell Mitchell being sent to the sin bin that left everyone scratching their heads.

As the Eels launched an attack on the Rabbitohs' defensive line, Mitchell was the first player to make a tackle on Sean Russell, applying pressure to the back of the centre's leg.
