Wayne Bennett, the master coach of the Dolphins, has made a surprising declaration of interest in taking over as coach of New Zealand's rugby league side, following Michael Maguire's departure.
The New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) decided to part ways with Maguire after he was offered the position as NSW State of Origin coach, replacing Brad Fittler.
Maguire's appointment with the Blues was confirmed, leaving New Zealand with the challenging task of finding a replacement for the man who played a key role in their dominant victory over Australia in the Pacific Championships final.
While former Kiwi captain Nathan Cayless and legendary halfback Stacey Jones are top contenders for the role, Bennett's admission has caused a stir across the Tasman.
The 73-year-old coach expressed his keenness in coaching the Kiwis when his contract with the Dolphins concludes next year.
He revealed his affection for the Kiwis and mentioned his coaching experience with some of their players at the Dolphins.
Bennett's words indicate that he is open to the opportunity and has left the door wide open for the New Zealand Rugby League to approach him.
