Kurt Capewell, in a huge twist, has made the decision to quit the Brisbane Broncos effective immediately and join the New Zealand Warriors on a three-year deal.

The back-rower had one year remaining on his current Broncos contract, but had been linked with an early release to free up salary cap space for other players such as Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam.

Capewell, who had been informed that he wouldn't be re-signed by the Broncos, sought an immediate release.

The Warriors, thrilled to secure a player of his quality and experience, believe he will be invaluable in mentoring their young back rowers.

While the Broncos have re-signed some promising youngsters, it was unlikely that Capewell would be retained beyond his current contract.

The Broncos are eager to retain Walsh and Mam to strengthen their position as premiership contenders, and releasing Capewell could potentially open up space for lucrative contract upgrades for the star pair.
