Warriors Hold Firm on Metcalf's Future

The Reason Behind the Warriors' Commitment to Luke Metcalf

Although he has secured a long-term contract with another team, the New Zealand Warriors are adamant about keeping Luke Metcalf until the end of the 2026 season.

Metcalf is set to join the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2027 on a three-year deal, having received an early release from his last two years with the Warriors, despite a previous extension that would have kept him at the club until 2028.

This transition follows a challenging season for the 27-year-old, whose role diminished after suffering an ACL injury last year and with the rise of Tanah Boyd.

Although Metcalf recovered from a hamstring strain three months ago, he has not returned to the NRL side.

His ongoing exclusion raised questions, particularly after Boyd's ACL injury during Magic Round, yet the Warriors chose to utilize Te Maire Martin and Chanel Harris-Tavita in the halves, relegating Metcalf to the NSW Cup.

Metcalf's management sought an early release before the June 30 deadline, but the Warriors declined, prioritizing their depth as they aim for a finals run.

Warriors CEO Cameron George emphasized that they never contemplated letting Metcalf leave before the season ends.

"While Luke's not going to be with us in the future, he's still well regarded within the club, particularly for the now and we've learned over the years gone by how depth will carry a long way in the competition, particularly in the finals," George told The Daily Telegraph.

"And we're one club that knows full well how much damage, if you don't have the depth there, it can do to the season."
